Y BONT

Y Bont continually works to improve the lives of children with additional needs. The original idea for Y Bont – in its format as a child and family centre in Bridgend – came from a group of like-minded parents of children with additional needs who were keen to establish somewhere that their children could go to learn and play given that no provision of its kind existed in the local community or beyond. In 1993 they started a four year long fundraising campaign raising in excess of £300,000 which was used to build the centre now known as Y Bont in the grounds of Heronsbridge School on Ewenny Road. Unlike all other schools in Bridgend, Y Bont is not funded by the Local Authority, it is a charity and as such operates 51 weeks of the year (closing only over the week of Christmas). This makes Y Bont as accessible to families of disabled children when they need us most.

The Team aim to actively engage with the local community as often as possible whether it be by visiting shops like Tesco’s or Sainsbury’s and Bridgend Indoor Market, taking the children for walks, visiting Bridgend Fire Station or indeed visiting Father Christmas in Seasons. Such experience-led learning helps to give them so much more than spending time in pre-school located within four walls.

By providing its services, Y Bont continually works to improve the lives of children with additional needs with services continually evolving based on what each child and their parents need. All of this is done with one primary aim – putting the care, development and the well-being of this child first at all times. Staff ratios are high to best suit the needs of those children requiring 1:1 support. This ensures the highest standards of learning through play as well as making the welfare of the children of paramount importance.
