The Origin Charity

We will be providing crucial literacy, entrepreneurship and skills workshops to 600 local young adults at different stages of education to help them stay in school and have better opportunities in the future. The local drop-out rate is currently around 70% in rural and marginalised communities in Ethiopia and many young people are missing out on important skills development. We will also give outreach business training and start-up seed capital grants to 200 vulnerable Hamar women who have been widowed or escaped domestic violence. These women struggle to provide food, shelter and pay for medicines for their children.

The Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia is undergoing massive transformations and it's critical timing for help now. 

Hamar people who migrate from villages to towns, or those who live in settlements closest to towns are the most vulnerable because of their higher exposure to risky and expliotative situations. By teaching young adults and women practical skills such as language, numbers, money management and basic business, we believe they will be better equipped and empowered to adapt and build more sustainable and healthy lives for the future. 

We invest in people and money raised for our project through this campaign will be used to directly fund training and education programmes through employing a local outreach team of mentors and educators who speak the local language. 

DISADVANTAGED YOUTH

Formal education is new in this remote corner of the world. Many young adults desire to go to school but face difficulties causing them to perform poorly and drop-out early. In year one, this initiative will work with local youth in the Hamar tribe who would otherwise be unsupported, through providing skills training and extra-curriculum learning clubs to help them prosper in education and beyond.

- 600 students will access educational support through weekly clubs, skills training and workshops; language, digital, life, CV

- 135 students will participate in entrepreneurship training

- 12 apprenticeship placements will be created for eligible young adults

- 9 entrepreneurship grants will be awarded

VULNERABLE WOMEN

Hamar women are some of the most marginalised in the world, in year one this project will build their capacity to withstand food insecurity through creating sustainable income generation opportunities, and tackle some of the root causes of vulnerability such as inequality and inadequate access to alternative livelihoods.

- 200 women will receive basic and ongoing business training and mentoring

- 9 seed capital grants will be awarded to groups of women to enable them to implement proposed income diversification

- 4 workshops will be constructed in villages to facilitate group training
